Concerned with the lack of housing opportunities available to persons with limited incomes, a small group of central Coast residents began meeting informally in the late 1960's. Learning of a federally sponsored program available to non-profit sponsors to finance the construction of owner built low-income housing, the group incorporated PSHHC in 1970 as a non-profit public purpose organization, optioned land with $2,000 in interest-free loans from a local church and submitted a successful application to Farmers Home Administration for a grant to operate a self-help housing program. Since that time over 1000 homes and more than 1200 rental units have been built.
